The Ultimate Vegan Guide to Plant-Based Milks
Plant based milks have taken over the world! Ok, that may be an overstatement but the dairy section at many supermarkets has many more dairy alternatives than ever before.
People are becoming more aware of the harmful effects of cow’s milk on their health and the inexplicable suffering that cows suffer on dairy farms. But thankfully there are more options than ever to help you avoid the cruelty of milk.
ALMOND
Chocolate. Vanilla. Sweetened. Unsweetened. The options are plenty and even better – you get your daily recommended intake of vitamins A, D, E, and B12!
SOY
The O.G. of non-dairy milks and often fortified with loads of muscle-building protein!
COCONUT
You know something has made it big when it’s available on the menu at Starbucks. Plus, it contains lauric and capric acids, both of which have antimicrobial, antibacterial, anti-fungal, and antiviral properties.
CASHEW
Perhaps one of the best tasting nuts to snack on, you can now buy it in milk form thanks to companies including So Delicious, Silk, and Pacific.
MACADAMIA
Milkadamia and Suncoast are two of the main companies bringing macadamia milk into the mainstream, and we couldn’t be more excited.
FLAX
Vegans already know flax as being a great source of omega-3s and ground flax as a perfect egg replacement. It’s also a great milk alternative since it contains nearly 5 grams of protein per serving.
PEA
Milk from peas certaintly sounded interesting to me when I first heard of it. But now that I’ve tried it I gotta say I’m hooked. It’s super creamy, full of nutrients, and available at Target stores across the country!
OAT
Über hip cafes around the world are turning to oat milk for its rich and delicate texture. It’s thick enough to support intricate latte art – perfect for Instagram.
RICE
Do you have food sensitivities? Perhaps to nuts or soy? Then rice milk is the option for you.
Forward thinking companies and compassionate people around the world are showing just how easy it is to leave cruelty out of your glass.

I shared Animal Equality’s post suggesting people go vegan and a plant based diet. A “friend” replied “Destroy more forests to grow almonds for milk or coconut trees, deforestation causes global warming, eat milk and meat, save the forests” – I know this is not true and would like to reply with a sensible argument, and wonder if you can provide some words for me to use? (I am currently so furious I would not make sense).
Hi Jan! Thanks for your comment. I personally do not respond to things like this…but I understand your frustration and wanting to pass on actual facts. While I’m no expert, I know that when you compare the amount of water it takes to produce almonds versus animal meat, there is no contest. Here is an article that has some links to info on the topic. http://www.businessinsider.com/real-villain-in-the-california-drought-isnt-almonds–its-red-meat-2015-4 However, I always bring it back to what the most important thing is for me personally, the animals. If this is what matters most to you to you may want to keep the focus there 🙂 Hope this helps!
