Modak
A traditional Indian treat, these steamed dumplings have a soft rice flour shell filled with sweet coconut, sugar, cardamom, and optional nuts. Hand-shaped and gently steamed, they’re a festive favorite—simple, aromatic, and delicious.
Ingredients
- FOR THE OUTER COVERING:
- 1.0 cups rice flour
- 1.0 cups water
- 1.0 pinch of salt
- FOR THE SWEET FILLING:
- 1.0 cups grated coconut
- .5 cups sugar
- .5 tsp. cardamom powder
- handful of chopped nuts (cashews, almonds, or pistachios), optional
Preparation
- In a saucepan, bring one cup of water to a boil. Add a pinch of salt to the boiling water.
- Gradually add the rice flour to the boiling water while stirring continuously to avoid lumps. Keep stirring until the mixture thickens and forms a smooth, dough-like consistency. Remove from heat, and let it cool for a few minutes.
- In a separate pan, add the grated coconut and sugar. Cook on medium heat, stirring continuously. Add cardamom powder and chopped nuts (if using). Mix well.
- Cook the mixture until it thickens slightly. Remove from heat, and let it cool.
- To shape the modaks, take a small portion of the rice flour dough, and roll it into a smooth ball. To form a small disc, flatten the ball using your fingers or a rolling pin.
- Place a spoonful of the sweet coconut filling in the center of the disc. Gently bring the edges of the disc together, pinching them at the top to form a pyramid or cone shape.
- Repeat the process for the remaining dough and filling.
- Place the shaped modaks in a steamer. Steam them for about 10-15 minutes, until the outer covering is cooked and becomes translucent. Once steamed, let the modaks cool for a few minutes.
